Hi, my name is Randi Smith and I currently am the owner of Capable Kids Home Therapy in Charlotte, NC. I have the wonderful opportunity to help children and their families overcome a variety of communication difficulties in their homes and other natural environments. The goal of sharing my thoughts here is to share some of my experience as a speech-language pathologist (aka ‘speech therapist’) working with children for the last 15 years as well as my newer experience of being a mom to two young children (Lucas, 3, and Alex, 1).
Books are a great way to teach language because they ‘make language visible’ which is so important for many children who for whatever reason, aren’t learning language in a typical manner.
As a therapist, I have often wanted to refer families to a good resource on the web that could guide them in making book choices for their children. But while my searches for such a site have turned up many great resources , they were never quite what I was looking for. So if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for, you should attempt to create it, right?
While I have a lot of experience with children’s books, there are still so many out there that I have never even laid eyes on, so I welcome everyone’s comments on different books they have fallen in love with, too!
